Welcome to Maths

Welcome to the maths curriculum area of the website. The curriculum has changed significantly over the last 12 months and we hope that this page and its contents will go some way to help both parents, carers and pupils understand the changes, the new curriculum and where they can find help with maths should they need it. This page will be updated as regularly as we receive new information or gain new resources within the department.

Key Stage 3

All pupils in Key Stage 3 are now following the new curriculum which serves as the building blocks for their GCSE course. Some pupils in Year 7 will follow a transition course up until December to get them up to speed with the key skills required for KS3 and it will give them a chance to revise any material from Year 6 they particularly struggled with. During KS3 they will gain key skills including developing their problem-solving skills and ability to communicate mathematically. All pupils have been put in ability sets based on their KS2 result and are tracked throughout their time at St Bede's with regard to the progress they are making. There are key assessment points throughout the year which are the same for all pupils in KS3; tests are undertaken during the last week of each half term and results immediately available to pupils. All pupils will have a flight path stuck in their exercise books which serves to track their progress made from Year 7 right through to Year 11 and uses the new GCSE grades 9 – 1. Their expected progress is mapped out on the flight path and, following assessments, if pupils have not made enough progress then an intervention programme is put into place; parents will be informed of this as and when necessary.

Homework is an integral part of the course and is set once a week. Homework tasks alternate between written problem-solving questions, basic skills and online tasks as well as on going revision using websites such as and (Please see timetable)

Homework clinics run each week - as per the timetable - and this is available to all pupils for any homework, either the compulsory set homework, or anything they don't understand.

Key Stage 4: Year 10 & 11 (2015 onwards)

KS4 GCSE Maths - Information Evening Presentation

All KS4 pupils from September 2015 onwards will follow the new GCSE course and be awarded grades 9 - 1 (9 being the highest and 1 the lowest). St Bede's pupils will follow a scheme of work which complements the AQA examinations which will be taken at the end of Year 11. Every pupil will sit three exams each lasting for 90 minutes, two of which will be calculator and the first paper will be non-calculator. Each exam will be worth one third of the total marks required.

The majority of pupils will initially follow a higher tier course which means they will be studying topics which range from Grade 4 to 8 (there is no specific content for Grade 9 as this is only to be awarded to the top 3% of pupils in the country who achieve a Grade 8). The rest of the pupils will follow a Foundation course which will cover topics ranging from Grade 1 to 5. Schools have been advised that a 'pass' (traditionally a Grade C) will be a Grade 5.

Your child's maths teacher or Mrs Scott can advise you on what tier of course your child will follow, and ultimately be entered for, at the end of Year 11.

Details of all the learning programmes can be found on the tabs on the right hand side of this page along with essential website links on the bottom right of this page. If you have any questions regarding the new GCSE course or what tier your child is studying then please do not hesitate to contact your child's maths teacher.

All GCSE pupils are closely monitored throughout their course by the undertaking of end of unit tests, the results from which are recorded in their exercise books so pupils are aware of what progress they are making towards achieving their targets. If any pupil starts falling behind then parents will be informed and an intervention programme put in place.

Homework is set every week (please see timetable), comprising either written problem-solving questions where pupils have to display clear structured working, developing their ability to communicate mathematically, or using a variety of e-learning packages. These include mymaths and methodmaths, all of which are closely monitored. Any pupil failing to hand homework in will be placed on a departmental lunch-time detention and will be advised of this a week in advance. Support is available at lunch-times in the Maths Department for any pupil struggling to complete their homework. Click here to find out more information.
