Smart Watches

Dear Parent /Carer

I would like to wish you all a very happy new year as we embark on a new term at St Bede’s. I trust that the Christmas break was both restful and came as a welcome chance to spend valuable time with family members.

My main purpose of writing to you is to highlight an addition to our school policy on the use of mobile technology in school. It is evident that a significant number of pupils have purchased smart watches and are now wearing them to school. We are concerned that pupils may be able to access both the internet and their phone service from school which may result in the disruption of learning or the potential for pastoral issues arising from the misuse of social media. For that reason, we will no longer be allowing pupils to wear smart watches in school.

A further concern is that pupils run the risk of incurring damage to this extremely expensive item as we are unable to guarantee the safety of the watches. Additionally, pupils may inadvertently enter an examination forgetting that they are wearing a smart watch which would clearly break the rules of the examination. This carries the potential of affecting the award of GCSE grades should this occur in final examinations in Year 11.

I am sure that you appreciate the reasons for the school’s decision to amend the policy but should you wish to discuss the matter any further please do not hesitate to contact me at school via telephone on 01695 570335 or email at

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely

Mr C. Horrocks
