German Christmas Market Letter to all Year Groups

25th November 2016

Dear Parent/Carer,

On Friday 9th December the Modern Foreign Languages(MFL) Department  is holding its annual German Christmas Market or Weihnachtsmarkt in school. This is the closest we could get it to December 6th, the Feast day of St. Nikolaus, which is traditionally celebrated in Germany as the start of Christmas. The night before, children leave their shoes outside, which St. Nikolaus magically fills overnight with sweets and small presents.

This is a wonderful opportunity for pupils to experience German culture and traditions, whilst also being able to purchase some Christmas goodies and presents. The event is run jointly by the MFL department and the Dream Team, with a donation being made to charity.

There will be a range of items available for sale including confectionery, candles, stationery, decorations, Christmas presents for all the family (pets included) and trinkets. Each item will cost no more than £1.50. Pupils will also be able to buy German-style Glühwein (warm Vimto!). In addition, there will be a face painting stall for those who fancy some festive adornment. We would therefore recommend that pupils bring in a small amount to spend (around £5 in change) but this is just a suggestion.

IMPORTANT – If you do not wish your child to have their face painted, please inform us by email or letter before Friday 9th December (and address any correspondence to the MFL department).

We do hope that your child will enjoy the Christmas market experience.

Thank you for your continued support, and we wish you a “Fröhliche Weihnachten.”

 Yours faithfully
